Chateau de Fontainebleau Begun in 1530, this sumptuous chateau was the project of King Francois I, and later became one of Napoleon's favourite residences. King Francois I procured the talents of Italian artist Benvenuto Cellini for parts of the interior, and a grand Louis XV staircase, added later, is a highlight. The ballroom, or Salle de Bal, conjures up images of men and women in ornate period costumes, about to begin the steps of a choreographed dance. As lavish and interesting as the interior is, time should also be taken to explore the surrounding grounds . Address: Pl. du General-de-Gaulle Fontainebleau France
